Financial Controller (Remote) — Finance + HR

About the Role

We’re looking for a hands-on Financial Controller who wants to build, not just maintain.

This role is for someone who loves clean numbers, strong systems, and clear reporting, but also enjoys helping shape how a growing company operates. You’ll own accounting, forecasting, compliance, and payroll, while also supporting key HR processes that keep the team running smoothly.

What You’ll Own

 

 

Accounting & Reporting

Run full-cycle accounting (GL, reconciliations, month-end close).
Produce accurate financial statements and maintain strong controls.
Partner with external accountants for audit and tax support.

Forecasting & Financial Modeling

Lead budgeting and rolling forecasts.
Build smart, usable financial models for revenue, margins, CAC/LTV, and cash planning.
Create scenario planning that helps leadership make confident decisions.
Deliver clear variance analysis — not just numbers, but insights.

Tax & Compliance

Manage sales tax filings and nexus tracking.
Handle multi-state payroll tax compliance.
Oversee payroll tax deposits and year-end reporting (W-2/1099).
Stay ahead of federal, state, and local requirements.


Payroll & HR Support

Manage payroll processing and PTO tracking.
Support onboarding, offboarding, and employee documentation.
Help keep policies current and compliant across states.
Assist with recruiting coordination and compensation benchmarking.

Systems & Process Improvement

Improve and connect accounting, payroll, and HR systems (NetSuite, QuickBooks, ADP, Gusto, Shopify, Stripe, Avalara, etc.).
Automate reporting wherever possible.
Document processes so the business can scale without chaos.
Help oversee vendors.


What We’re Looking For

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA is a plus).
5+ years in accounting, including leadership experience.
E-commerce experience strongly preferred.
Advanced Excel skills. You’re comfortable building real financial models, not just basic spreadsheets.
Multi-state payroll and sales tax experience.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to see the bigger picture.
Clear communicator who can explain numbers.
Self-starter who thrives in a remote environment.


Bonus Points If You Have

Experience in a startup or high-growth company.
Experience with NetSuite, Shopify, Stripe, Avalara, or modern payroll platforms.
A mindset for continuous improvement.
